Andy Irons kills it at Quicksilver Pro

Andy Irons (HAW), three time ASP World Champion, was back in action in the second round of the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast. In the first round of the Quicksilver Pro, Irons surfed against Tamaroa McComb from Tahiti and winner of the Quicksilver Pro Trials. Irons took out McComb, who shows promise to be a future world contender soon enough, 16.37 to 5.90. A memorable moment for Iron’s ride included an air that really can only be described as rock-n-roll floater look-a-like, but no one had really seen it before. Julian Wilson paddled out on his pink surfboard that would later be auctioned off in order to benefit breast cancer research (a disease that once hit too close to home, but fortunately his mother is now a survivor). Wilson shut out Pancho Sullivan of Hawaii, and is the last wildcard left in the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast. Jihad Khodr’s (BRA) World Tour debut was cut short by Adrian Buchan (AUS) after Buchan surfed a dynamite heat. Within the 30 minutes, Buchan earned a 9.00 and two 8.00s to wrap up the heat in his favor. This was a feel good moment after Buchan spent a portion of 2007 injured, yet still managed to finish 5th in the Pipeline Hawaii. Dane Reynolds (USA) and Jordy Smith (ZAF) were the only rookies of the day to win their heats. Daniel Ross (AUS) and Tiago Pires (PRT) couldn’t pull it off, and Aritz Aranburu (EUK) was forced to pull out after an injury during the Expression Session.
