Why Skateboarding needs a governing body

It’s been around 20 years since the National Skate Championships were held in the UK and they are gearing up for a traditional and exciting event. The competition date is set for September 2008 at an undisclosed (for now) venue. The UKSA is assuring fellow skaters that they are making sure that control of this event remains in the hands of skateboarders and those whose number one interest is the sport itself. They also went out of their way to explain why a governing body is necessary in skateboarding, saying that with the inclusion of skateboarding in international federations, “skateboarding has reached a point where we need a national entity.” Without a governing body, federations such as the Olympics Committee would set the terms where skateboarding was concerned; and well, that’s just not in the best interest of skaters. An International Governing Body, once appointed, would deal directly with the organization of skateboarding, as well as working with other federations to ensure the proper inclusion of the sport of skating. One of the perks of this governing body is that funds would be better controlled and managed, as would skateparks around the world. Because of the recognition and popularity of Skateboarding in the sports world, this type of management is now necessary, according to the UKSA. The alternative is to have the control of skateboarding placed into the hands of those who do not have the interest of skaters and the sport of skateboarding as a number one priority. And that’s obviously not a good thing.
